Cardboard Commander - Monthly After Action Report: April & May

Well spring is in the air and like most summers, my time becomes limited. However I am still very happy with my wargaming. It seems I am still getting to play some and to acquire more games to play in the future. I want to thank those of you who have reached out to us as our Northwest Arkansas had a few weather events that have impacted our home and my wife's job. We have been helping with recovery efforts in town and my wife has been volunteering around her damaged school, to help the students and families that have been impacted. Thank you all for your concern. You can read more about those storms here: https://www.5newsonline.com/article/weather/severe-weather/nws-tornadoes-benton-county-confirmed/527-5837500b-7047-4892-b081-eba302fb43a3

Enough of that... Welcome to the Cardboard Commander - Monthly After Action Report: April & May

Monthly AAR

Tac UP Wargaming has their 10 game challenge and I have done fairly well with that. You can see the 10 games I picked to play in 2024 here: https://www.cardboardcommander.com/post/my-ten-games-for-the-war-room-10-challenge

I have the Hunters, Stalingrad - Advance to the Volga, We the People and B-17 left to play to complete my TEN. Like I said I am happy with my progress. You can also check out the Tac UP Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/641236526485893

On the Table

In the past two months, I have gotten to play some Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit, Imperial Tide and Return to the rock: Corregidor. Of course I have also played in my Western Front Ace campaign game and the Combat Commander Ladder. So I have been fortunate to play a bunch the past two months.

Currently I have Vive L'Emperuer and Stalingrad - Advance to the Volga on my table. I have to say that Vive L'Empereur has became one of my favorite solitaire games. Herman Luttman did a fantastic job with this game. I love Stalingrad and I am so glad to have it back on my table for a go. What do you all have on the table?

Vassal Games

I have been very active on Vassal the past 2 months. Playing ASL Starter Kit 4 times, live and I also have 2 games PBEM. One big highlight was the live playing of Imperial Tide. I love this game and it is even better in real time.

I have really enjoyed playing Western Front Ace on Vassal, it makes playing the facebook campaign game easy and something I can do with 10-15 minutes of free time. Unfortunately, our young ace was killed in action over No Mans land. You can read more about that here: https://www.cardboardcommander.com/post/testament-of-wings-despair-on-the-eastern-front

Western front Ace

If you would like to play a game on Vassal, just shoot me a note and let's get it started!

Combat Commander

In April I won my ladder game Red Sector A and you can read that after action report here: https://www.cardboardcommander.com/post/red-sector-a-combat-commander-ladder-game-the-winds-of-change

May was a strange month. I reached out to my opponent and did not hear anything for a week or so. This was not good for our ladder timeline as I had a 13 day motorcycle trip planned in the middle of the month. When I returned I reached out again and unfortunately we could not make it happen. I reached out to Steve R to sub and he accepted. We played the May ladder game of Go for Broke and I lost badly, but it is always fun to play with Steve. Stay tuned as I will be writing up an AAR here in the next few days. I look forward to my June ladder match up. I love Combat Commander and if I had to limit my game collection down to 5 titles, Combat Commander would be on the shelf.

Pre Orders

I have Holland 44 , The Dark Summer, Stalingrad 42 and a new CC BP#9 Island Hopping on Pre-order. I purged more of my games that were collection dust via Noble Knight Games, so I was able to acquire a few new copies of games that have me interested. here are the new games on the shelf. Antietam 1862, The Lamps are going out and one that I am very excited for American Tank Ace. I am really looking forward to getting all of these on the table soon. I have just sent off my older copy of For The People and The Raid on St Nazaire to NKG and we will be on the look out for something else to add to the shelf.

Well that is about it for the past couples of months. I hope that you all have gotten to play a good amount of games for April & May. If you want to play a game, just hit me up and we will try and make it happen. Until next time, Have Fun, Be Kind and happy gaming!
